This movie rationalizes this problem by creating the detox mission and placing the decision in the hands of a therapist, who then also mistakes the haunting as further if extreme symptoms of her detox-ideas which are not half bad. When the nerd spills a drop of blood on the book, and the pages are telling him how to raise the demon, you know from the fact that this is a classic vampire trope, that he is in fact, by reading it, opening the door. However, the notion that it is through art, and its presumed deeper level of introspection, that the addict girl begins to rouse up the evil, is intriguing. One does get a sense from this kind of second-hand property that the generation is feeding on traditions that it no longer believes in or understands except as they continue to be blindly recycled through byways of horror other than movies. The book itself as a property, the quality of which is always important for convincing us with a chill that the danger is real, is more of a graphic novel than a true grimoire and the kind of language scrawled in blood over the pages such as Chop the Mfer is not the way witches talk but how black satan rockers do, so it’s a bit comical.

The glasses and beard nerd of course also finds a book that is covered in stitched skin and it is with this book that the screenwriters essentially defer to the script inside the book, as the entire movie tracks pretty solidly over its spells and methods, both of raising the demons and putting them back again.

The movie tips us off in the lead in that a witch was burned in the basement in a witch lair full of hung cats, and when they arrive the addict smells the smell so they go down to investigate and find not only all the dead black cats hanging around, in a nice effect, but the charred post, so, that’s kind of neat, they are actually sitting on top of a cursed witchburning site.

While in the original the cabin was a fairly run down affair, this one is a flat out uninhabitable mess, but they stay put. Their reason for coming is also entirely new, three counselors and a brother are bringing his drug addict sister to do cold turkey detox at the out of the way cabin. The woods that the kids go into, in Tennessee, and coming down from I think Michigan, the sweatshirts say, are very dark and grim, and remain almost swampy and black throughout. It’s not a great movie, and it’s a narrowly conceived, relentlessly physically punishing movie, and it ends up with a universe of blood, but, for all that, it’s not terrible. But for that, I thought that the remake of Spit was better than the original, and I have to say, compared to the original, this is an even match. This remake of a “classic” 1981 horror flick by Sam Raimi reminds me in its structure and mood of the remake of I Spit on Your Grave in that it is a different time, the expectations of horror are different, the storybook quality of the classic stuff is now passe, and everything today is driven in blood and guts.
